Zhou clarifies: 'It sounds the same'

Alfa Romeo came out at the end of last calendar year with the news that Guanyu Zhou would be racing for the team in 2022. This makes the driver the first Chinese to step into a car in Formula 1.

The rookie was still in Formula 2 last season. In the world championship, the Chineseman finished no further than third place, beating out Oscar Piastri and Robert Shwartzman, but he still managed to attract the attention of Alfa Romeo who were only too happy to take him on.

While more and more people are getting to know the newcomer to Formula 1, he noticed that many people are unsure about how to pronounce his name. In an interview with the Swiss Blick he decides to clarify once and for all.

"In Chinese, Zhou is actually Joe. It sounds about the same," stated Zhou, who has had a difficult road to Formula 1. "In China, it is very difficult to get to where I am now. I had to pursue this dream with full commitment at a very young age. My risk of not making it to Formula One was 80 percent."
