Toto Wolff remained cautious in defining what would count as "failure" under the current generation of cars.
"So I would, at that stage, let's see how it goes and let's see whether we have a car that has the potential to fight for a championship. But I'm a 'glass is half empty' person."

While Mercedes finished second twice in the constructors' standings, the German team was never involved in a championship battle from 2022 until 2025.
Many believe Mercedes will be the team to beat under the current generation of cars. However, Mercedes CEO and team boss Wolff would rather remain cautious when defining what "failure" would mean, should Mercedes once again fail to battle for the biggest prizes.
He explained to GPblog, among others: "Failure is such a harsh word in a way. We're into these regulations for the next few years and how I'd like to see is that the way we are thinking about it is not always the optimization on a weekend or a season, but seeing an upward trajectory.

"So, whatever the pace is that we're coming out of the blocks, I'm certain there will be challenges, our own challenges, the relative performance against the others.
"So I would, at that stage, let's see how it goes and let's see whether we have a car that has the potential to fight for a championship. But I'm a 'glass is half empty' person. I don't see any of that at that stage. I'm wary and skeptical," he concluded.
In general, Wolff is excited about what Formula 1 cars have to offer in the upcoming season. Read more about that here!
