Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has backtracked on earlier statements, saying they were twisted. According to the Daily Mail, Wolff alluded to an intentional crash between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. This is not what the Austrian has said.

Media is doing a good job

Recently an article appeared in which Wolff supposedly hinted at an intentional crash to secure the championship. Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner was disappointed when he read the statements of his competitor. Now Wolff himself is backtracking on the statements, saying they were twisted by journalists.
"You ask the right questions and then you get answers that can be seen as controversial and polarizing. That's great for the sport. I think the rivalry between the teams and drivers is important for the story of the sport," Wolff revealed according to the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com .

"I've been quoted as saying it would end up in a crash. I never said that," Wolff continued. The 49-year-old team boss reiterates what he did say at the time in the conversation with the Daily Mail: "I said that if it was to go down in the last race and it was about defending your position or not, I could see these guys racing each other hard, and if that could end up in an accident, I think it could end up in an accident.'" From this it can be concluded that Wolff never said that the crash will actually happen.
Wolff does let it be known that he does respect his rival despite the harsh statements towards each other. "He enjoys the fight in the same way I do, even though we are two completely different people. I respect his work as a team boss and he contributes to the show," Wolff concluded.
