In the early stages of the Austrian Grand Prix, Lando Norris was adjudged to have caused a collision with Sergio Pérez. The Mexican wanted to overtake Norris on the outside of turn four, but because of Norris' defending, Pérez ended up in the gravel, an incident for which the Englishman received a penalty.
Race direction ruled that Norris left his racing line while making the turn, leaving Pérez with nowhere to go. The McLaren driver received a time penalty of five seconds and two penalty points. Although Norris thought he was punished heavily, the driver had no choice but to accept this penalty.

Verstappen on Norris incident

In the post-race press conference Norris was still talking about the moment, and Verstappen decided to chime in. The Dutchman was critical of the regulations within Formula One and openly questioned how severely incidents should be punished. "I think it’s just not correct. I’ve been there myself, I was at nine at some points myself and yeah… it’s how it goes."
"Say you would get to 12, you don’t deserve a ban for that," Verstappen continued. "So there’s stuff… I’ve said it before, myself two years ago, that we should look into that."
