Verstappen: "I should've waited" to overtake

Max Verstappen has accepted that his collision with Sebastian Vettel in today’s Chinese Grand Prix was his fault.

Verstappen has now been involved in two collisions in as many races, after clashing with Lewis Hamilton in Bahrain last weekend.

The Dutchman dived up the inside of Vettel into the hairpin as he looked to follow team-mate Daniel Ricciardo and scythe through the field.

However, Verstappen wasn’t as successful the Australian, who went on to win the race, as his front wheel collided with Vettel’s sidepod, sending the pair into a spin.

Verstappen was awarded a 10-second penalty for the collision, which meant even though he finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton on track, he was classified behind the British driver due to his penalty.

Verstappen: “I could see he was struggling on the tyres and tried to brake late in the corners. I locked the rears and hit him – it was of course, my fault.

“It’s not what I want, it I easy to say after I should have waited, and that probably would have been the best idea, but unfortunately it happened.”

Vettel eventually finished eighth, as his perfect start to the season ended in dramatic style.
