Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost accepts that Pierre Gasly’s fourth placed finish in Bahrain was fortunate due to retirements for other drivers.
Retirements for both Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen in the Red Bulls and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen allowed Gasly to move up the order after starting fifth on the grid.
Gasly’s fourth place were his and Toro Rosso’s first points of the season, with team-mate Brendon Hartley yet to get off the mark.
Tost said: “You know what the fourth place today is? It was also lucky. Ricciardo out, Verstappen out, Hamilton had some problems at the beginning but the race pace was quite good, constant and Pierre did not make any mistakes.
“The pit-stops went well, that means if these drivers had been in there we could have finished sixth, seventh place without any problems.”

Gasly matched the second best position for Toro Rosso, with Sebastian Vettel’s Italian GP victory in 2008 the only time the team have made the podium in their history.
Carlos Sainz also scored a fourth placed finish in Singapore 2017.
