It has been an extremely tricky 2024 for Sergio Perez. After starting the season well and then signing a two-year extension to stay at Red Bull, the Mexican has struggled tremendously, and there are many rumours now building surrounding his future at the Austrian team. Pundits from Sky Sports have their ay on what the future may hold for Perez.
After signing that contract that kept him as a Red Bull Racing driver until 2026, the performances from Perez have been very disappointing. After yet another Q1 elimination, this time in front of his home fans in Mexico City, he now has five eliminations in Q1 in 2024, one more than Yuki Tsunoda in the VCARB, Red Bull's junior team.
Along with these poor performances in qualifying that then put him on the back foot for Grands Prix, he has been involved in lots of crashes throughout the season, an expensive issue for the Austrian team that they do not expect from an experienced driver like Perez. As a result of all of these issues, the noise surrounding his future at Red Bull is getting louder, and there is uncertainty about his seat on the grid for next season.

"No team can afford a passenger"

Before the Grand Prix in Mexico City got underway, pundits from Sky Sports were asked about Sergio Perez and what the future may hold for him, and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok answered first: "This is a big red letter day of the year. But he's started down in P18. You have to say, based on recent form, along with the rumour mill that that's building, it might well be his last Mexican Grand Prix."

Martin Brundle was then asked about the issue, and he had a similar view to Chandhok: "No team can afford to have a passenger. for 2025, they need both drivers to be in tip-top form. Unless he can do something miraculous in the next five race weekends of Formula 1 racing, that won't be him, will it?"
