Recently, Sergio Perez was going through a rough patch within Red Bull Racing, as he struggled with the RB20. Talking to DAZN ES, 'Checo' admitted that he did thought about retirement, but decided not to give up.
While Max Verstappen currently still leads the drivers' championship, Sergio Perez is in only in P8 in the standings. Earlier, a contract extension was announced for the Mexican, but the difficult run for Perez did not end, and his position was also reviewed during the summer break. Eventually, it was decided that he could remain at the Austrian team.

Perez did not want to give up

The Red Bull Racing driver admitted that he thought about quitting the competition at times during the aforementioned tough period. "For the past six months I have been thinking about it, but it took me three seconds to decide. In the end, it would be the easy way out and to give up after so many years, I would never have forgiven myself."
The Mexican said he was happy to take matters into his own hands. "I want to finish my career when I want to and not when someone tells me to. That's my main focus: reaching the point where I can decide my future."

Perez has a contract for the upcoming year and his contract could be extended by a futher year by Red Bull. However, he has also declared he does not want to remain in the competition as long as Fernando Alonso is doing so at the moment, and also wants to spend time with his family. "For now, I still have a contract for two years and two years in F1 is a long time, but I know the end is getting closer," Perez concluded.
