Charles Leclerc and his home race in Monaco have never proved a happy combination. The Ferrari driver drove to pole in his hometown twice before but never won. Every time there was a setback or bad luck, Leclerc missed out on the win. This Saturday, Leclerc put his car in first place for a third time, hoping that this time luck will be on his side on Sunday.
The provisional grid shows two Ferrari drivers and two McLaren drivers manning the first two rows. Max Verstappen is 'only' on the third row, also behind George Russell. While Red Bull Racing's car could not convince, Russell gave his Mercedes team some hope with a good qualifying session. Once again, Russell was faster than his teammate, former world champion Lewis Hamilton (seventh).

Alonso and Perez the setbacks in Monaco

Yuki Tsunoda (eight), Alex Albon (nine) and especially Pierre Gasly (10) were the positive standouts in qualifying. The latter may start a Grand Prix from a place in the top ten for the first time this season. Less happy with their starting positions are undoubtedly Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez. Both former winners in Monaco failed to get out of Q1. Alonso is 14th on the provisional grid, while Perez is two places behind them.
Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg were disqualified after qualifying and will therefore start at the back. The team has already indicated that both drivers will start the race from the pitlane.
