De Vries lost speed: 'As it got drier, less and less'

An eighteenth time for Nyck de Vries of Scuderia AlphaTauri. The Dutch Formula 1 driver was once again beaten by teammate Yuki Tsunoda in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. The conditions were very tricky.

So said De Vries to Viaplay. Rainy qualifying was a hectic session in Montreal and Q1, in which De Vries participated, had rapidly changing conditions. For instance, the track was wet at first, but the racing line did dry up during the session.

De Vries: "Very difficult conditions. The track dried up a bit as the session progressed, of course. Actually if the track had stayed wet, we would have stayed outside on one set. In the end, we had to react quickly. [...] At one point you have to react so quickly that small differences make very big differences."

De Vries continued: "When the track dries out so quickly, you just don't know where the limit is in each corner. Looking for that grip is then where the challenge lies. Also when the track got drier, I feel we lost more performance." The Dutchman noticed the hectic pace around him and was bothered by traffic. He had to abort his penultimate lap, when his tyres were just getting up to temperature.
