The latest consultations between the teams, the FIA and Formula 1 have shown that the idea of sprint races is embraced. It is not yet certain, but a working group is being set up to work out the plans further. In the meantime also drivers are asked about this idea and Lando Norris likes it.

No unnecessary advantages

"It’ll be interesting to do something maybe a little bit different", the British driver told Radio BBC 5. "as long as it doesn’t interrupt the true, natural racing of Formula 1, and it doesn’t give people unnecessary advantages. That people who are not in deserved positions are suddenly able to score points, or people get benefits from it, or disadvantages from it."
Norris points out that he doesn't like the idea of people suddenly being able to score in undeserved positions. However, the risk of that is much greater with a reversed grid than it is with sprint races and the idea of a reversed grid is off the table for Formula 1, but the question now is, of course, to what extent a sprint race is fair enough.

Happy with how things are now

The working group will have to figure this out, so that will take some time. Next, Norris states that he is actually quite happy with how Formula 1 works now. Norris: "Trying it and trialling it to know if it’s a good thing is always very welcome, but I like how Formula 1 is now."
"I like the way it’s set out, I like the build-up going into Sunday, the qualifying – it’s just the history, it’s how Formula 1 is, and I think it has a lot of heritage like that. I hope it [the proposal] doesn’t change too much, but I don’t mind if they try something every now and then."
