Mexican media: 'Being the best is no guarantee that public will accept you'

No victory for 'their' Sergio Perez, while thousands of Mexicans had taken their seats in the grandstands of the Miami circuit. Sadness all around, is also evident in the tone of the media in the Central American country.

Sports website Esto addressed the love Perez received from fans and the boos for Verstappen with a separate article. The medium wrote: "The triumph was for Max Verstappen, but the love and appreciation is there for Sergio Pérez." Esto continued, "You can be the best driver in Formula 1 today, it is not a guarantee that the public will love and accept you."

Another article on the same website rather clinically explained the course of the Grand Prix. In the end - Esto concluded - 'Mad Maxwassuperior' and Perez had to settle for second place, five seconds off the winner. "A remarkable difference from a Red Bull," the site realises.

In other media, the reaction to Perez's defeat was remarkably mild. No big words, mainly a factual account in the various media. Only a single newspaper still sticks a qualification on the performance of Verstappen, who passed Perez on his way to victory. Diario Amanecer, a national newspaper, was one such medium that admired - albeit cautiously - the way Verstappen drove in Miami: "As a result of this brilliant race, Verstappen, who repeated last year's victory and also set the fastest lap, now leads the world championship with 119 points, 14 more than 'Checo'."

It was just one word from which the appreciation sounded, but it was more than the rest of the media could get over their lips.
