FIA President Jean Todt says it could be decades before Formula E is able to even get close to the speeds of Formula 1. The all-electric series has just begun its sixth season and has attracted some big names from the world of motorsport, with Mercedes and Porsche new for 2019/20.
Despite the growing interest in Formula E, the cars are nowhere near as fast as those in F1, with the races lasting half as long, so there is still plenty of work to be done if FE bosses want to take on F1 one day.
According to Yahoo News, Todt said: "You could not envisage to have Formula E substituting Formula 1.
"FE races last three-quarters of an hour at average speeds of up to 118 km/h (73 mph), while F1 races run for more than twice as long, with average speeds more than twice as high over distances in excess of 300 kilometres (186 miles).
"There is not one race car able to do 300 kilometres at Formula 1 speed today. It could be decades before it can happen, if it does happen."
