Hamilton happy with stewards ruling insisting 'lessons must be learnt'

Lewis Hamilton was angry with Max Verstappen after the Italian Grand Prix. The Dutchman crashed into his competitor during the race and both drivers could not continue.

The stewards called both Hamilton and Verstappen after the race and concluded that the Red Bull Racing driver was at fault. As a result, the world championship leader received a three-place grid penalty for the Russian GP.

Hamilton felt it was more than right for Verstappen to receive a penalty. "I think it's an important precedent moving forwards for the safety of the drivers that there are strict rules set in place," he stated to Motorsport.com. "This will continue until we have to learn from our scenarios on track, and I don't have a history of these incidents. Ultimately, when you get away with things like that, then it's easy just to continue to do it."

The Briton thinks it is good to look at the broad regulations. "I think all of us drivers, we are on the edge. When we have the inside line, every single driver, past or present, will try to hold on to his position," said Hamilton, who also felt Verstappen was at fault. "There is a known rule that the driver who is ahead, it's his corner."
