Canadian GP not in danger despite huge forest fires

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix could not take place earlier this season due to natural disasters, and now fierce forest fires are ravaging Canada. Nevertheless, the continuation of the Montreal Grand Prix, for which drivers will take to the track for the first time over a week from now, is not in danger. Formula 1 informs.

More than 400 forest fires are currently raging in Canada. This has led to mass evacuations in the Quebec region, of which Montreal is the largest city. That is where the Gilles Villeneuve circuit will host the Canadian Grand Prix in just over a week. According to local media, more than 6.7 million hectares of forest have now been scorched. As far away as New York City, the smog resulting from the fires is noticeable.

Montreal has also seen a thick layer of smog in recent days. Nevertheless, Formula 1 is currently assuming that the race in the city will go ahead. An F1 spokesperson tells Mirror Sport : "The race is not at risk. We have been assured by all the relevant information that the situation in Montreal at this time is different to other parts of the country and northern US and the risk remains low and air quality is good in Montreal."

Canada returned to the F1 calendar last season after a two-year absence. In 2020 and 2021, the race in Montreal did not take place because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last season, the race was a winner for Max Verstappen.
