George Russell: First F1 season a “steep learning curve”

Russell has been a part of Mercedes’ junior driver programme since 2017 having tested for Force India (now SportPesa Racing Point) before being given a seat at Williams alongside Robert Kubica for 2019.

The 21-year old made the most that he could with the slowest car on the grid, out-qualifying Kubica at all 21 races and finishing ahead the majority of the time during races.

The Pole managed to finish higher than the Briton on the championship thanks to picking up a point at the chaotic German Grand Prix.

“My first season in Formula One has been a steep learning curve and I’m already looking forward to Australia when we go racing again next year,” Russell said.

Russell had been testing in the Mercedes W10 around the Yas Marina Circuit, compiling 145 laps and setting the fastest time (1:37.204) ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc before heading into the off season.

“I’m excited for a few days off to relax a little before I’m back to my training regime to get the best possible preparation for 2020,” he added.
