Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi entered Q3 for the first time and beat his teammate, Kimi Raikkonen in Baku. Despite his 10-place grid penalty, the Italian is confident of scoring race points.
He finished the qualifying session in eighth place with Alfa's car looking strong. The 25-year-old spoke of his excitement after notching up his debut run in the third session.
"To drive in Q3 for the first time makes me very happy. My pace was very strong during the second free practice. We have taken the maximum out of the car," Giovinazzi said.
"Despite my grid penalty, I am still going to try to score points. The past two years have been chaotic races. We cannot predict how it will go. We will do our best to drive a good race. We also try to fight to the front of the field."
Renault, who have been slower so far this week, currently sit level with Alfa Romeo in the constructors' championship. As they both push to become 'best of the rest', Sunday's race in Baku could provide an early indication for this battle.
