Verstappen on Perez's 0 points in Monaco: 'Wasn't extra happy or anything'

Red Bull Racing left Monaco with 25 World Championship points. No other team scored more points, yet the lowest points total in a Grand Prix weekend this season was for the Austrian racing stable. Sergio Perez crashed in qualifying and thus missed out on quite a few points. Max Verstappen did good business in the battle for the world championship, but Red Bull less so. How does he view that?
In the press conference, which included GPblog in attendance, Verstappen was asked about Sunday being a two-faced day for Red Bull. "I think it's mainly just the team, of course, they want to score more points. But that's Monaco, you know, it can bite you. I've been in that position myself. But from my point of view, it doesn't really change anything," he said.

Always finish at least second

The Dutchman is not so concerned with the current standings in the world championship. He approaches it weekend by weekend and the 25-year-old driver has only one goal: to be on top by the end of 2023. "I know that it's a very long championship, you need to be very consistent. You can barely afford mistakes, especially when it's only one team, one opponent really. Because at the moment, it looks like best case you win, worst case you're second."
So even in a lesser weekend, the motto is to come second, according to Verstappen. "So you can't really lose too many points like that. But yeah, from my side, just keep grinding every single weekend. I mean, it's pretty similar, it doesn't really change anything for me. It's not like I came out of Monaco relieved or whatever. I'm planning to gain seven points every single weekend," he said ahead of the Spanish GP.
