Zanardi's son: 'It's a long road, but little by little things are improving'

It's been almost a year since racing legend Alex Zanardi crossed the path of an oncoming truck with his hand bike. After his CART accident in 2001 in which he lost both legs, he fought for his life for the second time. He succeeded again, but recovery will be even tougher this time around.

No one knows how long recovery will take

While the family is still in court dealing with a case against the truck driver, Zanardi's son Niccolo told La Repubblica the current status of his father's case.
"My father has been conscious for a few months now. Little by little his condition is improving. It's small steps and we know it's going to be a long road [to recovery], it's going to take a lot of time. Nobody can tell us what he will be able to do again, but it is getting better and better," Niccolo said.
The court in Siena stated earlier this week that the driver of the truck followed the traffic rules and did his best to avoid an accident. The lawyers of the family are now appealing against this. They claim that the truck crossed the centre line with two wheels just before the accident.
