The wait is over: Sauber, as announced on 1 January, has announced what the Swiss team will then really be called during the upcoming Formula 1 season: Stake F1 Team.
In recent seasons, Sauber competed in F1 under the Alfa Romeo name. From 2026, the Swiss will become Audi's factory team. In the meantime, a new name was needed. The team had registered with the FIA under the name Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber. To GPblog, a spokesman for the team explained that two names would be switched during the season: Stake F1 Team Sauber and F1 Team Kick Sauber. This is because Stake is an online gambling company and that is not allowed to be used as a sponsor name in every country.

Sauber chooses other name

Not long after the announcement, there was hilarity, especially on social media, over the name Kick Sauber (kick Sauber, ed.). The team then announced that "a new identity" would be announced on 1 January. That has since happened. Sauber will be called Stake F1 Team in 2024. How the team of Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou will resolve this at races where the name may not be used is still unknown, but plausibly Stake will be replaced by Kick in those cases.
