Much has been said about Sergio Perez's contract at Red Bull Racing in recent weeks. With two races left on the calendar before the summer break in Formula 1, time is running out for the Mexican. Robert Doornbos would already make the Mexican leave the team.
A few days ago, there were big speculations regarding the contract of the Guadalajara-born driver. Namely, there would be a performance clause tied to the commitment. Thus, Red Bull could choose to send Perez away if he is further than 100 points away from teammate Max Verstappen. The gap between the two Red Bull drivers is already 137 points, so that would then mean bad news for the 34-year-old driver.

Doornbos on the clause in Perez's contract

Doornbos told Ziggo Sport Race Café that he did not understand anything about this choice by Red Bull. "Why are you giving him two more races? I mean, I see him tomorrow (at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, ed.). I don't know if they translate this into Spanish. Maybe I need to nuance that. There have been guys sent off for a lot less," the former driver told us.
It has often been pointed out that Perez makes Red Bull a lot of money because he brings a lot of sponsorship with him into Formula 1. "There is too big a commercial package [behind it]. If he wasn't Mexican and didn't bring those extra millions, he would never have had the opportunity for so long," Doornbos told firmly.
